End violence against journalists

CNDH urges to clarify crimes committed against journalists.

In the framework of the “International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists”, and in view of the persistence of aggressions against journalists, the CNDH demands the authorities of the three levels of government to urgently take the necessary measures to ensure respect for freedom of expression, press and access to information and to provide optimal conditions so that the informative work of journalists and communicators is not hindered. The CNDH, in agreement with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) recognizes that Mexico is one of the most dangerous countries to practice journalism in Latin America; that kidnapping, disappearance and homicide are attacks on freedom of expression that are perpetrated on a daily and alarming basis against journalists. In the last two decades, there have been 165 homicides of journalists in Mexico, of which 12 have occurred this year. In addition, from 2005 to date, there have been 21 cases of missing journalists, while from 2006 to date there have been 54 attacks on media facilities, which demonstrates the serious panorama of violence faced by journalists and communicators in the course of their work. From the CNDH we reaffirm our commitment to accompany the necessary actions to protect them and ensure the full exercise of freedom of expression. No journalist should be attacked for the exercise of his or her work.
