Social challenge consists to promote tolerance and equality: NHRC

Eradicating racism and intolerance

The challenge we face in present times and of this new generation is to consolidate in the conscience, social interaction and habits of the population, a daily attitude of tolerance, acceptance and equal treatment for all, said the President of the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH), Rosario Piedra Ibarra, during the inauguration of the virtual meeting “Afro-Mexican Cultural Expressions and Traditions”.

Institutions and society, she added, must encourage a national crusade to combat racial prejudice and attitudes of intolerance that hurt the dignity and human rights of people based on the color of their skin, ethnic origin, dress, sexual orientation, disabilities and age.

In commemorating the “International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination”, the National Ombudsperson made an urgent and forceful call to the institutions of the Mexican State to increase the fight against all forms of discrimination that hurt millions of Mexicans affected by expressions of violence, hatred and segregation practices, and thus put human solidarity and unrestricted respect for the law as the basis for coexistence and social relations.

We are aware that discrimination in our country has multiple and complex origins, expressions that we must know in depth, because they are manifested in social, political, economic, legal and cultural structures. In relaunching our fight against discrimination, we must understand that it is an ominous practice rooted in our history since pre-Hispanic Mexico, the conquest, the colonial period and up to the present day, and an objective and comprehensive understanding of its nature will allow us to promote inclusive public policies that more effectively combat the injustices of exclusion.
