On May 21, 2021, the media reported that the aggressions occurred when the parents of Figueroa Becerril intended to meet with the head of the state of Puebla State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) of Puebla to prevent the property, where the alleged suicide of their daughter occurred in 2018, from being handed to over to the owners, holders of a court order to that effect, and demand to enforce the injunction for the authorities to carry out again and properly the expertise to clarify whether it was a femicide.

According to the Report on Violence against Women January-March 2021 of the Executive Secretariat of National Public Security System, during the quarter January to March 2021, the state of Puebla recognizes only 10 femicide cases, and the total number of women murdered in that quarterly period was 45. This shows that only 22 percent of the cases were considered femicide by Puebla state authorities.

The National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) urges the Puebla State FGE to guarantee the rights of Zyanya Figueroa’s family, and to respect the human rights defense’s exercise and the right to free demonstration.
