Urgent Action Needed to Prevent and Eliminate Violence against Women with Disabilities: CNDH

The violence experienced by this population group is magnified when they suffer humiliations that wounded their dignity and violate their physical and mental integrity.

During the presentation of the Special Report “Violence and the Sexual Reproduction Rights of Girls, Adolescents and Women with Disabilities in Mexico”, Rosario Piedra Ibarra explained the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) carried out an exploratory exercise to investigate the legislation, policies and actions undertaken to protect the rights of this sector.

Therefore, Piedra Ibarra urged the authorities to undertake and consolidate actions aimed at preventing and eliminating violence against women with disabilities, to fully and effectively guarantee their sexual and reproductive rights, to be treated with respect, quality and dignity in the provision of services of this nature, and to involve data and mechanisms that include their informed consent.

She also recalled that the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities recommended the Mexican State to implement legislation and all programs and actions foreseen for women and girls with disabilities, including equalization measures and affirmative actions, to eradicate discrimination against them in all spheres of life.
