Protect the health of migrants in Reynosa

In the presence of Covid-19 cases, preventive and curative medical attention is requested.

On June 28, deputy visitors from this National Commission went to the Plaza de la República, where they witnessed that the GRM Organization of Brownsville, Texas, was conducting rapid tests for COVID-19 on people of foreign origin who spend the night there, while the head of the Tamaulipeco Institute for Migrants in Reynosa confirmed that during the course of that day the tests applied to approximately 50 people of various nationalities had been positive.

For this reason, this Autonomous Body requests the State Health Secretariat, as well as the authorities involved in the care of migrants who are in the aforementioned place, to take the necessary actions to protect their integrity and that, in the face of confirmed cases of COVID-19, preventive and curative medical care be provided in a timely manner, in order to avoid affecting their health and putting their lives atrisk.

Since becoming aware of the case more than three months ago, the CNDH has made periodic visits to the Plaza de la República, with the aim of observing and monitoring respect for the human rights of migrants who are in that place, making representations with the corresponding authorities and providing guidance to those who require it. On 23 March of this year, it also issued precautionary measures to public servants of the three branches of government, without sufficient action being taken to date to comprehensively meet the needs of migrants in vulnerable situations.
