Persistent violence, looting, property destruction and deaths fueled by the inadequacies of the criminal justice system. More than 70 people have lost their lives in looting in KwaZulu Natal and Gauteng, the epicenters of the violence. The unrest began after former President Jacob Zuma surrendered to KwaZulu Natal authorities on the evening of July 8, following a Constitutional Court ruling that found him guilty of contempt of court and sentenced him to 15 months in prison.

The Ombudsman’s Office reported that, from January to June of this year, 2891 alert notes have been reported for disappearance of girls, adolescents and adult women (16 on average per day), which represents 18% more than what was reported in the same period of 2021 (2457). This means that the problem is worsening in a context in which the sanitary measures have been made more flexible by COVID-19, in view of which an adequate treatment of the reports and an effective search that guarantees the integrity of the victims must be ensured.
