CNDH Issues Precautionary Measures to Protect Family of Environmentalist Killed in Sonora

Requested protection for the inhabitants of the El Bajío ejido who oppose the operation of mining companies in the zone.

After the murder of Robledo Cruz and his wife on April 29 in Puerto Peñasco was reported in the media, this National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) requested the governor of the state of Sonora, the General Commissioner of the National Guard (NG), the Secretary of Public Security, the Attorney General of that state and the Municipal President of Caborca to implement actions to safeguard the physical integrity of the environmentalist’s family members.

Particularly, the CNDH asked the Attorney General’s Office of Sonora to start the investigation of the facts, taking into consideration the work of Nature defense that the victims were carrying out in the face of the impact caused by the operations of the mining industry in the region and to decree the pertinent measures to protect his family members, providing them with the emotional support they need.

Likewise, this National Commission required the mentioned authorities to implement protocols to protect the El Bajío inhabitants, in order to avoid irreparable damages to the human rights to life, security and personal integrity.
