Mexico and Argentina Sign Agreement to Prevent and Eliminate Torture and Other Cruel Treatment or Punishment

“It is necessary to consolidate a joint work that puts us on the side of people and that safeguards the integrity of them all”: Rosario Piedra.

During the signing of a collaboration agreement between the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture (NMPT) of our country and the National Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CNPT) of Argentina, the president of the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) emphasized the urgency of consolidating a more efficient and empathetic work with victims, where justice is the insignia and contributes to eliminate torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, particularly in internment centers.

At the event, held virtually, Rosario Piedra Ibarra pointed out that in order to fulfill this purpose, alliances must be established that favor the cooperation, the exchange of experiences and dialogue, and “a joint work that puts us on the side of the people and that safeguards the integrity of all persons”.

Together with the president of the National Committee for the Prevention of Torture of Argentina, Juan Manuel Irrazábal, with whom she signed the agreement, she expressed that even though the nations of the region have signed different international instruments on the subject, torture is a scourge that is still present and affects, mainly, people from lower social and economic strata, as well as those belonging to indigenous or Afro-descendant populations, as has been confirmed by the United Nations itself, so that only joint work will allow its eradication.
