CNDH deplores the murder of human rights defender Simón Pedro Pérez López.

Urges the FGE of Chiapas to carry out a thorough, diligent and prompt investigation.

The National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) regrets the murder of defender Simón Pedro Pérez López, a member of the organization “Civil Society Las Abejas de Acteal”, and expresses its condolences to the activist’s family and his colleagues, while making an urgent appeal to the Attorney General’s Office (FGE) of Chiapas to comply with the obligation of due diligence, exhausting the line of investigation related to the defense work carried out by the victim.

According to various media reports, the activist, who worked in the promotion and defense of the human rights of indigenous peoples, accompanying communities that have denounced acts of violence, was killed by a gunshot wound fired by a subject on a motorcycle in the municipal capital of Simojovel, Chiapas.

With this regrettable murder, the National Commission has recorded 72 killings of human rights defenders, in the period from 2006 to 5 July 2021, of which 12 have been verified during the course of this year.

The National Commission will remain attentive to the investigation carried out by the authorities of the state of Chiapas for the clarification of this homicide, as well as regarding the attention received by the activist’s family, to whom they must provide emotional containment measures in response to such regrettable facts.
