Investigate detention of journalist Omar de la Vara Salazar: CNDH.

The journalist was detained for no apparent reason by municipal police officers in Hermosillo, Sonora.

The National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) makes a strong appeal to the authorities of the municipality of Hermosillo, Sonora, to investigate the arrest of journalist Omar de la Vara Salazar, head of the news outlet “@PajaritoNews1”, which allegedly occurred on the night of Friday, July 2, after he carried out a press coverage, without being explained the reasons, reasoning or legal basis for his detention.

The CNDH reiterates the State’s duty, through the institutions and agencies of the three levels of government, to ensure that journalists and communicators who are carrying out their reporting work are not arrested, threatened, intimidated or limited, since this would imply a violation of their rights because they are exercising their profession.

For the National Commission, it is of the utmost importance that, in the context of violence that journalists and communicators continue to face in our country, public servants guarantee respect for, protection and promotion of freedom of expression, since under this assumption the necessary conditions will be largely ensured so that journalists can cover events of notorious public interest.
