CNDH urgently appeals local Congresses to guarantee the gender identity of trans persons

The exhortation was made in the context of International Transgender Awareness Day.

The National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) urgently appeals the local Congresses of the different states of the country to guarantee the gender identity of these populations and, above all, to create or strengthen public policies that guarantee them access to well-paid jobs, health, education without discrimination and decent housing, among other rights, allowing them to live free of violence and vulnerabilities that have historically affected them.

Local Congresses still have a historical debt with trans persons, since there is no initiative or interest in modifying the respective Civil Codes to guarantee the right to their gender identity. This, despite the fact that different members of the Mexican Federation of Public Human Rights Organizations have repeatedly explained the importance of such reforms.

It should be noted that any legislative modification of this type must be adequately formulated so as not to be inoperative or revictimizing in practice. This implies involving civil society organizations, human rights defenders and, of course, trans persons in the formulation of the respective reform projects.
