Concern over spying on journalists and human rights defenders: CNDH

Of serious importance, as Mexico is one of the most dangerous countries to practice journalism in Latin America

The CNDH makes a strong appeal to the authorities of the three levels of government, reminding them that they have a reinforced responsibility in their obligations of prevention and protection in the face of the risk that crimes against human rights defenders and journalists will continue to occur, due to specific situations, in which the authorities know that there is a real and imminent risk that these attacks will be committed, since they are aware of the structural contexts of violence, impunity and self-censorship that exist in our country.

The National Commission reiterates that the Mexican State owes an outstanding debt to the human rights of journalists and human rights defenders, especially to the women of both unions, also considering the alarming increase in cases of gender-based violence, many of which have culminated in femicides and other forms of violence.

That is why the CNDH insists on the need for the authorities to publicly recognize the importance of the work carried out by human rights defenders and journalists, committing itself to collaborate to create a common front that ensures the free work of defense of human rights and expression, as well as the prevention and protection of any act that seeks to inhibit or hinder these sensitive and relevant tasks. for the benefit of society.
